John Singleton Copley was a renowned American painter who lived from 1738 to 1815. His works spanned various genres, showcasing his exceptional talent and artistic versatility. One of his notable pieces is "The Death of Major Peirson, " completed in 1783, which depicts the tragic event that occurred on January 6, 1781. Another remarkable creation by Copley is "Samuel Verplanck" from 1771, capturing the essence and character of its subject with great precision. Copley's expertise extended beyond portraiture as he also depicted historical events such as the "Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar" around 1782-1783. This painting showcases his ability to convey action and drama through art.
