Joseph Selleny (1823-1864): A 19th-century Austrian photographer who captured the beauty and diversity of far-off lands. From the rock temples of Mamallapuram, India (1858), to the missionary's house on Puinipet Island in the Caroline Islands (1858), Selleny's lens revealed the vibrant colors and rich culture of Asia. His images of the island of St. Paul in the Indian Ocean (undated, c1850s), native Tahitians (1859), and the streets of Madras (1858), showcase his exceptional talent and dedication to documenting the world around him. Palm groves in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and the gateway to Point de Galle (1858) further illustrate Selleny's ability to capture the essence of each location, leaving us with a captivating glimpse into the past.
