The Karst Plateau, located in Gorizia and the Carso, witnessed intense battles during World War I. In 1916, the Italian advance towards Trieste was illustrated on a map, showcasing their determination to conquer new territories. Despite facing strong air currents, our airship managed to navigate through the night, highlighting the relentless efforts made by both sides. A vigorous counter-offensive on the morning of July 22nd resulted in a significant victory for us on the Karst. The enemy faced a real rout as our forces pushed forward with unwavering strength. Interrogating Austrian prisoners captured during this operation provided valuable insights into their strategies and tactics. The constant activity of artillery on the Karst demonstrated the intensity of warfare in this region. Our aviators played a crucial role too; one daringly attacked an enemy balloon under observation that ultimately fell ablaze. October 11th marked another victorious day as we launched successful attacks after intense bombing campaigns on the Karst. The ferocious melee that ensued on August 26th ended with fleeing enemies amidst a grove in this rugged landscape. In aftermaths of battles, we recovered abandoned Austrian guns from sinkholes scattered across the Karst plateau. These trophies symbolized our triumph over vanquished foes who resorted to desperate stratagems like setting flames to stop our offensive along lsonzo. Facing violent attacks from Austrian counter-offensives along its extreme line, soldiers bravely defended their positions on the Karst plateau. Behind them lay caves and dungeons where prisoners were often held captive or raided upon by advancing troops. The history etched onto these colour lithographs depicts not only fierce combat but also showcases resilience and valor exhibited by those fighting amidst such challenging terrain –the majestic yet treacherous beauty of the Karst Plateau remains forever intertwined with tales of heroism and sacrifice.
