King Charles V, also known as Charles the Wise, was a prominent figure in French history. Born in 1338, he ascended to the throne of France in 1364 and reigned until his death in 1380. His reign marked a period of stability and prosperity for the kingdom. One notable aspect of King Charles V's rule was his focus on strengthening the economy and financial administration. Jean de Montaigu, Vidame du Laonnais, served as Superintendent of Finance during this time, ensuring efficient management of resources. This dedication to fiscal responsibility is evident in an artist's depiction from 1898 that showcases Charles V alongside Jean de Montaigu. Another significant event during his reign was his coronation with Queen Joanna at the Great Church at Rheims. The grandeur and symbolism captured in an engraving depict their royal crowning ceremony, emphasizing their authority and legitimacy. Charles V's commitment to diplomacy is highlighted by an image from 1870 showing him with Jeanne Vandergeynst at their daughter Marguerite's cradle. This portrayal suggests that even amidst political turmoil, family life remained important to him. In addition to these domestic affairs, King Charles V played a crucial role on the international stage. An engraving depicts him presenting Du Guesclin with the Epee of High Constable—a symbol of trust and recognition for Du Guesclin's military prowess—showcasing Charles' strategic alliances and support for capable leaders. The influence of other monarchs can also be seen during this era; George Noble's artwork portrays Edward III leading King Charles V as a prisoner after battle—an encounter that shaped both nations' histories forever. Charles V married Joanna of Bourbon in 1350; they were depicted together by artists in various renditions throughout history. These portrayals capture their regal presence while highlighting their union as partners ruling over France. Lastly, two artworks from different periods depict Charles V's coronation.
