Kunichika Toyohara, a renowned ukiyo-e artist of the late 19th century, captured the essence and beauty of Japanese theater through his exquisite woodblock prints. In one of his notable works, he depicted Ichikawa Udanji I as Sugawara no Michizane in the play "Shinrei Sugawara Jikki" in 1883. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this historical character to life on paper. Another masterpiece by Kunichika showcases Sawamura Tossho II as Karukaya Doshin from the series "Flowers of Tokyo" in 1872. This print displays a captivating blend of elegance and strength portrayed by the actor's expressive face and graceful posture.
