Embarking from Saint Louis (Louis IX) in the 13th century, knights set off on the 7th Miniature Crusade, their coats of arms proudly displayed. Amongst the vibrant tapestry of medieval life, a delicate pink lily varietal blooms with its striped trumpet petals, Crinum latifolium. This handcoloured engraving captures its beauty as if plucked from a botanical magazine. In another scene, Charlemagne graciously receives and knights the four Aymon sons at his court. The Unmasked Tyrant Napoleon I is depicted in caricatures from around 1814. An altarpiece showcases Christian martyr Saint Denis holding his severed head while Emperor Charlemagne stands beside him as a Byzantine emperor. A battle rages on in Vincent de Beauvais' "Le miroir historial, " translated into French by Jean de Vignay during the 15th century. The marechaux Robert de Clermont and Jean de Conflans meet their tragic end at the hands of Etienne Marcel and his men within Charles's room at Palais de la Cité. The War of the League of Public Good unfolds with ferocity as Louis XI clashes against Charles, Count of Charolais (future Charles the Temeraire). Meanwhile, amidst the Hundred Years War, Thomas Kyriell leads an English army against Jean de Clermont's forces at Formigny. Jean de Bourbon, Lord of Rochefort dons a white soutine adorned with azure quarter blazon featuring gold fleurs-de-lis and a red band over his red velvet hooded robe. This depiction comes from a book paying homage to Count Clermont. Through these historical snapshots emerges one constant: like an enduring symbol throughout time, the lily flower persists—its elegance transcending centuries and capturing our imagination even today.
