Amongst the intricate illustrations lies an awe-inspiring portrayal of Saint Longin, also known as Longinus, alongside Virgin Mary and Saint John. This exquisite piece from the Middle Ages' Barbarian art in Lombardy showcases Duke Orso's peace through an ivory representation of Christ crucified. The essence of this pivotal moment in history is further captured by various masterpieces throughout time. In a 1503 oil painting titled "The Crucifixion, " we witness the contrasting figures of Saint Dismas, or Dysmas, representing good thiefhood while Gesmas symbolizes evil on either side. Pietro Lorenzetti's fresco from 1335-1340 in Basilica di San Francesco takes us to Assisi, where we encounter a captivating Calvary scene. Its profound symbolism resonates with viewers as they contemplate Christ's sacrifice on wood. Traveling to Subiaco in Italy, one encounters a mesmerizing detail within a fresco dating back to the 14th century. Here, INRI inscribed upon the cross accompanies Saint Longinus holding his spear and another figure tenderly offering Jesus Christ vinegar-soaked sponge. Further exploration into medieval art reveals yet another stunning Calvary masterpiece painted on wood between 1457-59. The artist skillfully captures emotions surrounding Christ's crucifixion and invites contemplation upon its significance. Lastly, an intriguing fresco from 1416 portrays yet another perspective on this sacred event. With meticulous attention to detail and composition, it depicts not only Christ with INRI but also includes Saint Longinus witnessing this divine moment unfold before him. Through these diverse artistic interpretations spanning centuries, we are reminded of Longin's presence during Jesus' crucifixion—a centurion who bore witness to this profound event.
