"Longin: The Centurion Witnessing the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ" In the Royaumont Bible, a remarkable depiction of the New Testament's Crucifixion scene unfolds. Amongst the intricate illustrations lies an awe-inspiring portrayal of Saint Longin, also known as Longinus, alongside Virgin Mary and Saint John. This exquisite piece from the Middle Ages' Barbarian art in Lombardy showcases Duke Orso's peace through an ivory representation of Christ crucified. The essence of this pivotal moment in history is further captured by various masterpieces throughout time. In a 1503 oil painting titled "The Crucifixion, " we witness the contrasting figures of Saint Dismas, or Dysmas, representing good thiefhood while Gesmas symbolizes evil on either side. Pietro Lorenzetti's fresco from 1335-1340 in Basilica di San Francesco takes us to Assisi, where we encounter a captivating Calvary scene. Its profound symbolism resonates with viewers as they contemplate Christ's sacrifice on wood.
