Lord Carnarvon (1866-1923) was a prominent figure in the exploration of ancient Egypt. He led the party that was invited to the unofficial opening of the Tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. In a gelatin silver print, we see Lord Carnarvon alongside H. E. Abd El Aziz Yehieh Bey, Governor of Kena, Mohamed Fahmy Bey, Momour Markay, Luxor and Sheikh Ahmed Shaker, Judge of Luxor as they chat on the terrace of the Winter Palace Hotel in 1922. Another gelatin silver print captures Lord Carnarvon's first visit to the Valley of the Kings with his daughter Lady Evelyn Herbert and Howard Carter at the entrance to Tutankhamun's tomb. The excitement and anticipation are palpable as they stand before this monumental discovery. In yet another photograph, we witness Lord Carnarvon accompanied by Lady Evelyn Herbert and Howard Carter inside Tutankhamun's tomb itself. This image immortalizes their historic moment within its hallowed chambers. Lord Carnarvon's passion for Egyptology is further evident in a photo where he can be seen with his party traveling through the Valley of Kings in a motor car during his first visit there. Aside from his archaeological endeavors, Lord Carnarvon had diverse interests depicted through engravings such as "The Mysterious Cabinet Trick" and "The Committee of Imperial Institute. " These demonstrate his involvement beyond Egyptology. A color lithograph showcases Lord Carnarvon surrounded by great treasures discovered in ancient Thebes' tomb—a testament to his contributions towards uncovering Egypt's rich history. Lastly, an engraving portrays Ascot Winners and Runners-Up—an indication that it also enjoyed equestrian pursuits outside his explorations.
