Louis XIII, the King of France during the 17th century, was a complex and influential figure in French history. Known for his military campaigns and political maneuvering, he left an indelible mark on the nation. One notable event in Louis XIII's reign was the Siege of La Rochelle in 1628. In this engraving, we see the king personally shaving down the city walls after its surrender, symbolizing his forgiveness towards its inhabitants.
