Louis XV, the King of France from 1710 to 1774, was a significant figure in French history. His reign saw both triumphs and challenges that shaped the nation's destiny. As a child, Louis XV witnessed the death of his great-grandfather, Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King. This poignant moment marked the passing of one era and the beginning of another. The young Duke of Anjou bid farewell to his predecessor with reverence and respect. In 1722, an allegorical painting captured an important event in Louis XV's life - his engagement to Infanta Marie Anne Victoire of Spain. Commissioned by Paris, this oil on canvas sketch depicted their union as a symbol of diplomatic alliance between two powerful nations. The courtly life during Louis XV's reign was filled with grandeur and entertainment. Engravings from "18th century - Institutions: usages et costumes" showcased scenes such as "Jeu du roi, " where courtiers engaged in games under the king's watchful eye. Another engraving portrayed a masquerade at his court, highlighting the opulence and extravagance that characterized this period. Louis XV himself was often depicted in various forms. In one artwork titled "The King Louis XV as Jupiter, " he assumed god-like qualities associated with power and authority. A lithograph from 1825 showed him seated on his throne adorned with crown and scepter – symbols befitting a monarch. Yet not all moments were glorious for Louis XV; there were attempts on his life too. An engraving documented Damiens' failed assassination attempt against him – evidence that even kings faced danger amidst their rule. Portraits played an essential role in capturing different facets of Louis XV's persona throughout his lifetime.
