"Louis XV: The Reign of a Controversial Monarch" Step into the world of Louis XV, the King of France who ruled from 1715 to 1774. His reign was marked by political intrigue, artistic splendor, and societal transformations that shaped the course of French history. In "View of the Palace of Fontainebleau from the Parterre of the Tiber, " we catch a glimpse of Louis XV's opulent lifestyle. This oil painting showcases his grand palace, symbolizing his power and wealth. But not all moments in his life were filled with luxury. In "Death of Louis XIV at Versailles, " we witness young Louis XV standing by his deathbed as he bids farewell to his predecessor, Louis XIV - known as the Sun King or Louis the Great. It was here that a child became king and embarked on an eventful journey. As he ascended to power, Louis XV faced numerous challenges. One such incident is depicted in "The assassination by Damiens. " This engraving immortalizes an attempt on his life and highlights both discontent within society and threats against royal authority. Despite these tumultuous times, art flourished under Louis XV's patronage. From exquisite porcelain ewers to marble sculptures like "The King Louis XV as Jupiter, " creativity thrived during this era. These masterpieces showcased both royal extravagance and artistic prowess. It also enjoyed lavish entertainment at courtly events like masquerades and games such as "Jeu du roi. " Engravings from Paul Lacroix's work provide us with glimpses into these vibrant social gatherings where nobles reveled in elaborate costumes while celebrating their monarch. However, it wasn't just festivities that defined this period; intellectual pursuits also played a significant role during this time. In "Philosophy, literature and art during the reign of Louis XV, " we see how thinkers explored new ideas, writers penned influential works, and artists pushed boundaries in their creations.
