Mac Mahon (1808-1893) was a prominent figure in French history, known for his military achievements and political career. He played a significant role in the Crimean War, where he famously declared, "I'm here I'm staying, " showcasing his determination and leadership. In 1855, Mac Mahon led the First Zouaves to Malakoff, leaving an indelible mark on the war effort. As a respected general, Mac Mahon gave crucial instructions to Colonel Collineau during this time. His portrait reflects his distinguished status as Duke of Magenta and showcases his strong presence. In later years, Mac Mahon's influence extended beyond the battlefield. He visited President Jules Grevy during his presidency and attended various important events such as funerals and presidential elections. The funeral painting by Ernest Jean Delahaye captures the somber atmosphere surrounding Mac Mahon's passing in 1893. Mac Mahon's legacy also includes his involvement in international affairs. A portrait from the Italian campaign depicts him at that time while another image shows a handshake between Elisabeth de Mac Mahon and Austrian Empress Elisabeth. His tenure as Marshal of France is highlighted through portraits depicting him during different periods of his life. Additionally, photographs capturing council meetings demonstrate his active participation in decision-making processes. The Battle of Reichshoffen or Woerth stands out as one of Mac Mahon's most notable military engagements during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). This conflict shaped European history significantly.
