Mungo Park's historic journey to Kamalia, Africa, led him to encounter the vibrant Mandinka (Mandingo or Malinke) people. Their distinctive bark suits and polygamous lifestyle were a fascinating contrast to Park's European background. Amidst the village scenes, three Mandinka girls played, oblivious to the cultural exchange unfolding around them. Park, filled with joy upon finding the majestic Niger River, penned his observations in his travels. Yet, his expedition ended tragically with his death in 1806. Through engravings, we catch a glimpse into this rich West African culture, where a Mandinka couple poses proudly, and Park finds respite in a native hut.
