Marie Antoinette from Austria, the ill-fated queen of France, is a figure shrouded in controversy and intrigue. From her opulent lifestyle at the Hameau de la Reine to her tragic end on the scaffold, her life was marked by both extravagance and adversity. In the famous portrait "Marie-Antoinette with a Rose, " we see a glimpse of her beauty and grace. The chromolithograph captures her delicate features and regal demeanor, reminding us of the allure that captivated an entire nation. However, not all depictions were so flattering. In one print from the French Revolution era, she is portrayed as a target for public scorn. A cartoon mocks Queen Marie Antoinette as she faces judgment before the Revolutionary Tribunal Court – an ominous foreshadowing of what awaited her. Amidst political turmoil and growing unrest, Marie Antoinette found herself entangled in scandalous affairs such as "The Queens Necklace Affair. " This infamous incident involved Madame de la Motte's failed attempt to steal a necklace that the queen had refused. The consequences were severe – flagellation, branding with iron marks, and imprisonment in Salpetriere. As tensions escalated during the revolution, King Louis XVI's capture of Bastille was commemorated on July 14th with celebrations like "The First National Federation. " Little did they know that this event would ultimately seal their fate. The separation between Marie Antoinette and her young son Louis XVII became inevitable when they were imprisoned together in Temple prison. Finally came October 16th, 1793 – a day etched into history as Marie Antoinette faced execution at Place de la Revolution. Engravings depict this somber moment on the scaffold where she met her tragic end. Her death marked not only an end to monarchy but also symbolized profound societal changes brought about by revolution. Another chapter in Marie Antoinette's life was the infamous "Case of the Collar.
