"Marie Stuart (1542-1587): A Tragic Tale of Power, Love, and Betrayal" Step into the captivating world of Marie Stuart (1542-1587), a woman whose life was filled with intrigue, passion, and ultimately tragedy. In this engraving from "Histoire Populaire de la France, " we see Marie indulging in a chess game with James Balfour while her lover Jacques Hepburn (Bothwell) watches on. But behind the scenes of this seemingly innocent pastime lies a web of deceit and treachery. The murder of David Rizzio in Mary Stuart's presence sent shockwaves through the kingdom. It was then that she received a message from her husband Henry, informing her of his involvement. As Queen consort of France and Scotland by marriage to Francois II, Marie faced imprisonment and execution for treason at the hands of her cousin Elizabeth I. This marble sculpture by Jean Jacques Feuchere immortalizes her tragic fate.
