Mark Lemon (1825-1880): A 19th-century literary and artistic figure, best known as the editor of Punch magazine. In this scene from his book "About London" (1862), Whitehall is depicted as it looked before the fire of 1691. Lemon's work showcased his keen observational skills and love for London's history. His wit and humor were also on full display in Punch, as seen in the engravings "One Kindly Word Before We Part," "Who Brings the Bride Home?," and "The Turf." Lemon's friendship with Charles Dickens is evident in this rhyming letter exchanged between them in the mid-19th century. His impact on British literature and culture continues to be felt, as evidenced by his portraits and works, such as "Small House Over The Water" and "The Amateurs" at St. James's Theatre (1845).
