The marmoset, specifically the Pygmy Marmoset, holds the title for being the world's smallest monkey. Found in the Upper Amazon region spanning Colombia and Peru, these tiny creatures are a sight to behold. Nestled within the lush Amazon Forest near Leticia, Colombia, they thrive in their natural habitat. South America is home to these remarkable primates that captivate our hearts with their adorable appearance. In a 19th-century wood engraving depicting apes and monkeys' hands and feet, we can see how unique and dexterous they are. In captivity, a Titi Pigmeo (Cebuella Pygmaea) was born just ten days ago—a testament to conservation efforts aimed at preserving this precious species. Another member of the marmoset family is the Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), often found with its head tilted in captive environments across Brazil. Venturing into Rio de Janeiro's City of Leme reveals an enchanting encounter with Black-tufted marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). Their presence adds charm to this vibrant cityscape as they swing through trees with grace. From lithographs showcasing boys cherishing their pet marmosets to illustrations featuring Flying Lemurs, Baboons, Diana Monkeys alongside them—these captivating creatures have left an indelible mark on human culture throughout history. Even grandeur recognizes their allure; depicted on a ceiling detail in the reception room of the Grand Duke is a mischievous monkey. This artwork serves as a reminder of how deeply intertwined our lives have been with these fascinating animals since time immemorial.
