"Marquise de Maintenon: The Influential Second Wife of King Louis XIV" Francoise d Aubigne, also known as Madame Scarron and later Marquise de Maintenon, was a remarkable figure in the court of King Louis XIV of France. Born in 1635, she rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential women in French history. In her portraits, Francoise is depicted wearing an elegant black hood over a tall lace and ribbon headdress called Fontange. Her attire includes a magnificent mantua made of blue velvet adorned with ermine trimmings – a symbol of her high status at court. As the mistress-turned-wife of Louis XIV, Madame de Maintenon played a pivotal role in his life. Their relationship began discreetly while she served as governess to his illegitimate children. Eventually, they married secretly in 1683 after the death of Queen Marie-Therese. Madame de Maintenon's influence extended beyond her personal relationship with the king. She became renowned for her intelligence and piety, establishing herself as an important patroness of arts and letters during the reign known as "The Sun King. " Her power within court circles was evident in engravings depicting her surrounded by ladies-in-waiting – loyal companions who supported her endeavors. These images capture not only their beauty but also highlight their roles as confidantes and advisors to Madame de Maintenon. One notable engraving shows Peter the Great visiting Madame de Maintenon at Chateau de Maintenon in 1717. This meeting between two powerful figures underscores both Francoise's enduring influence even into old age and how widely respected she was among European royalty. Chateau de Maintenon itself stands as a testament to Francoise's legacy. Viewed from its entrance or garden, it exudes grandeur befitting someone who left an indelible mark on French history.
