Mary of Modena, the wife of King James II of Great Britain, was a woman of elegance and beauty. In this 1907 portrait, she is depicted in a stunning velvet and ermine gown adorned with precious gems. Her regal attire is complemented by a pearl necklace that gracefully drapes around her neck. The crown placed outside the frame serves as a reminder of her royal status. Another portrait from c. 1673 captures Mary's captivating presence, attributed to English artist Nicholas Dixon. Her graceful features are highlighted in this exquisite piece, showcasing her timeless beauty. However, not all moments in Mary's life were filled with glamour and luxury. An engraving titled "Flight of the Queen of James II" depicts her fleeing England with their son, the Prince of Wales, and their entire court in December 1688. This event marked a tumultuous time for Mary as she sought refuge amidst political unrest. The coronation ceremonies hold significant importance for any sovereign couple, including James II and Mary of Modena. A lithograph showcases their coronation day alongside other English monarchs who have been crowned throughout history. Romeyn de Hooghe's artwork titled "Le Feste des Trois Rois" portrays an extravagant celebration where Mary would have undoubtedly shone amongst the festivities. Similarly, his piece "L Europe Allarmee" reflects the turbulent times during which Mary lived. In contrast to these historical depictions, an engraving from 1872 illustrates Queen Mary's flight once again but through the lens of contemporary media coverage found in the Illustrated London News. Lastly, two artworks capture grand occasions within Westminster Abbey: "The banquet in the Great Hall at Palace Westminster. . coronation of James II, " dated 1902; and "The Coronation of James II, " painted by William Sherwin in 1903. These images serve as reminders that despite challenges faced by both royalty and commoners, moments of celebration and grandeur endure throughout history.
