Celebrating the 79th birthday of the esteemed statesman, Prince Otto von Bismarck, at Prince von Bismarck's residence in 1894 (as depicted in this lithograph), the Iron Chancellor takes a brief respite from the affairs of state. Surrounded by portraits of notable figures from his past, including Chlodwig Carl Viktor, Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfurst, and Napoleon III, following their encounter after the Battle of Sedan in 1870 (oil on canvas), Bismarck reflects on his accomplishments and the legacy he has left behind. This moment of quiet reflection is captured in another oil on canvas painting from the same year. The iconic leader, as depicted in yet another oil on canvas painting from around 1850, remains a towering figure in German history, his influence and impact still felt to this day.
