A blast from the past: Mixed-traffic locomotives of the past, such as the iconic 47xx class, once ruled the rails in the UK. Here we see a selection of these versatile engines in action. No. 4704 and No. 4700 power their way through a station yard in an undated photograph. No. 4707 is seen at Stoke Gifford in 1960, while No. 4700 and No. 4702 can be found at engine sheds, possibly Old Oak Common. And let's not forget The Night Journey, featuring a Southern Railway mixed-traffic locomotive at a crossover in 1935. No. 4701 rounds out our collection, a reminder of the rich history of these workhorse engines that once handled a variety of freight and passenger trains on the British railway network.
