Step back in time to the enchanting world of model railways, where miniature locomotives and intricate landscapes captivated both young and old. In 1936, Gamages toy department showcased a stunning collection that left visitors in awe. Meanwhile, at the British Empire Exhibition in Wembley, London, in 1925 and later revisited in 1935, King George V and Queen Mary marveled at the craftsmanship on display. One notable enthusiast who dedicated himself to this beloved hobby was Reverend A H Webb. During the 1930s, he meticulously constructed his own railway layout that became a marvel of its time. Preserved forever through black-and-white photographs, his creation stands as a testament to his passion. Traveling further afield brings us to Dans Le Foutah Djallon - an engraving depicting an exotic scene with a toy train dating back to either 1935 or 1942 by Francis Law Durand. This artwork transports us beyond our imagination into distant lands where even model trains can traverse uncharted territories. The allure of model railways extended far beyond mere playthings; they were also educational tools for aspiring engineers. "The Young Engineer, " created by an unknown artist around c1930, showcases how these miniature worlds sparked curiosity and nurtured future innovators. Fast forward to South Yorkshire in 1960 when Michael Walters crafted a remarkable model railway layout in Wickersley. His artistic skills brought life to tiny towns and rolling countryside scenes that delighted all who beheld them. Returning once more to the past takes us back to another momentous occasion: On a Model Railway exhibition held in 1925 but revisited again twelve years later in 1937. These events served as gathering places for enthusiasts from all walks of life who shared their love for this captivating hobby. Finally, we arrive at Central Hall's grand opening for The Model Railway Club's prestigious annual exhibition - now celebrating its 33rd year.
