The mouse deer, also known as the Chevrotain or Lesser Mouse Deer, is a fascinating creature that has captured the attention of artists and photographers throughout history. On page 129 of "The Chevrotin" from 1810-17, we can see a watercolor and manuscript text depicting this elusive animal. In another artwork titled "Asian fauna, " we find a colorful lithograph showcasing both the Greater Mouse-deer and Arabian gazelle. Interestingly, an albino Javan Chevrotain was photographed eating from a bowl at London Zoo in 1926. This rare sight was captured in both black and white and color photographs, highlighting its uniqueness. A colored engraving from 1833-39 further showcases the beauty of these creatures. In their natural habitat, such as Kaeng Krachan National Park in Thailand, these small mammals display various behaviors. An adult Lesser Mouse-deer is seen standing beside a log while another walks gracefully on the forest floor in May and November respectively. In February, an adult male is captured drinking from a forest pool with its head close-up. But it's not just adults that captivate our attention; even fawns are adorable. One photograph shows a fawn feeding on fallen fruit in a forest clearing during February. These glimpses into the life remind us of their delicate existence within our diverse ecosystem. Their unique appearance and behavior make them truly remarkable creatures worth admiring and protecting for generations to come.
