Amidst the chaotic streets of old London, a chilling tale unfolds as a man, once respectable and upstanding, transforms into a sinister figure of violence and fear. In the new garotte suit, the monstrous Mr. Hyde, engraved in mugged (colour litho), mercilessly attacks an unsuspecting victim. The Good Samaritan, painted in 1751-52 (oil on canvas), looks on in horror, a stark reminder of the kindness and compassion that can be lost in the face of evil. Meanwhile, in Robert Louis Stevenson's "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," the victims' brief glimpses of the terrifying transformation leave them trembling, as seen in this illustration by S.G. Hulme Beamish for a 1930 edition. Mr. Hyde's brutal clubbing of his victims is echoed in the brutal attack on Dr. Syntax in St. Giles, depicted in a black and white photograph. Yet, amidst the darkness, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, painted in oil on canvas, offers a beacon of hope. May we all remember to show kindness and compassion to our fellow man, no matter the circumstances, and never be mugged by the evil that surrounds us.
