Among the many treasures housed within these hallowed halls are the renowned Raphael Rooms, adorned with breathtaking frescoes that showcase the genius of Raphael (1483-1520). One of his most celebrated works is found on the ceiling of the Room of the Signature. Painted in 1508, this masterpiece depicts various scenes representing different aspects of theology. From "The Baptism of Constantine" to "Christ as Sol Iustitiae, " each fresco captures a momentous event or symbolizes profound theological concepts. In another room known as the Room of Justice, completed in 1508 as well, Raphael explores themes related to justice and cardinal virtues. Here we find depictions such as "Justice" itself alongside other allegorical representations that inspire contemplation on moral principles. Moving further into Raphael's rooms brings us to an exquisite piece called "The Oath of Leo III. " Painted between 1516-1517, this fresco portrays Pope Leo III taking an oath before Charlemagne during their historic meeting. It serves as a reminder not only of historical significance but also highlights religious authority and power. Venturing into yet another chamber named after its stunning artwork - The Room of Fire in Borgo - visitors encounter captivating scenes like "Christ Tempted by the Devil" and "Christ Between Mercy and Justice. " These pieces were actually painted by Pietro Vannucci (Perugino), one of Raphael's mentors who influenced his early career. Lastly, don't miss Lorenzo Lotto's contribution to these remarkable rooms with his work titled "Emperor Justinian Receiving The Pandects. " Completed in 1511, it showcases Emperor Justinian receiving civil laws from scholars while emphasizing legal wisdom and governance.
