Benito Mussolini, the charismatic Italian fascist leader, left an indelible mark on history. In 1915, we catch a glimpse of his personal life as he stands proudly with his wife Rachele Guidi and daughter Edda in Milan. Seven years later, Mussolini seizes power in Italy, forever altering its political landscape. The Lateran Agreements signed between the Italian government and the Holy Vatican Siege solidify Mussolini's reign by guaranteeing the sovereignty of the Pope in the Vatican and formalizing Catholicism as Italy's religion. This move further consolidates his power base. Mussolini's influence extends beyond Italy's borders as well. In Berlin, Germany, he delivers a powerful speech adorned with Nazi flags alongside Adolf Hitler himself. The alliance between these two leaders would shape Europe for years to come. However, not all aspects of Mussolini's rule were positive. In February 1923, he ordered mass arrests of Communists in Trieste and conducted searches at "Lavoratore" newspaper offices – actions that highlight his authoritarian tendencies. Before rising to prominence as Duce (leader) of Italy from 1925 to 1943, Mussolini played a significant role during World War I alongside trade unionist Filippo Corridoni during an interventionist demonstration in Milan. Their collaboration foreshadows their future paths diverging dramatically. One pivotal moment that propelled Mussolini into power was when he led the March of the Blackshirts on Rome in October 1922—a defining event that marked fascism's ascent in Italy. Throughout his rule, propaganda played a crucial role for Mussolini; it helped cultivate an image of strength and authority both domestically and internationally. His speeches resonated far beyond national boundaries—his words echoing through Berlin during an influential address delivered there in October 1937.
