Nakamura Nakazo I, also known as Nakayama Kojuro VI, was a prominent actor during the late 18th century in Japan. His talent and versatility allowed him to portray various roles on stage, captivating audiences with his performances. In one of his notable roles, Nakazo I played Chidori alongside Sawamura Sojuro III as Shige in 1785. This portrayal showcased his ability to bring depth and emotion to his characters. Another memorable performance was when he portrayed the Shirabyoshi Katsuragi opposite Matsumoto Koshiro IV as the monk in 1783. Nakazo I's range extended beyond traditional Japanese plays. In the play "Edo no Fuji Wakayagi Soga, " he took on the role of Kudo Suketsune around 1789, displaying his adaptability across different genres. He also depicted Kamaya Buhei in "Fude Hajime Soga no Tamazusa" in 1768, showcasing his dynamic acting skills. Collaborating with other renowned actors such as Ichikawa Monnosuke II and Segawa Kikunojo III, Nakazo I created mesmerizing scenes on stage. Together they brought characters like Munesada and Sumizome to life under Torii Kiyonaga's direction in 1784. Not only did Nakazo I excel at portraying serious roles but he also showcased comedic talent. In a play from c. 1782-1790, he played a peddler of toys who entertained audiences with humor and wit. Throughout his career, Nakamura Nakazo I left an indelible mark on Japanese theater history through unforgettable performances that continue to be celebrated today.
