Nicolaus van Aelst, a renowned artist of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, left an indelible mark on the art world with his exquisite works. One such masterpiece is "St. James Minor, from Christ, Mary and the Apostles, " created between ca. 1590 and ca. 1610. In this painting, van Aelst captures the essence of St. James Minor's devotion to Christ and his role as one of His apostles. The delicate brushwork brings out every intricate detail in St. James' expression, conveying both reverence and humility. Another notable work attributed to van Aelst is "The Holy Family with Saint Clare, " painted around 1590-1600 by Guido Reni but influenced by Nicolaus van Aelst's style. This piece showcases the harmonious bond between Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and Saint Clare—a representation of familial love transcending time. Van Aelst's talent also extended beyond traditional religious subjects; he contributed to Michelangelo's iconic Sistine Chapel frescoes series depicting prophets and sibyls. Notably, he worked on "The Prophet Ezekiel" as well as "The Eritrean Sibyl. " These captivating figures display Van Aelst's ability to capture emotion through masterful composition. Furthermore, Van Aelst collaborated with Cardinal Francesco in creating stunning plates for "The Labors of Hercules. " The title plate exemplifies his attention to detail while incorporating Cardinal Francesco's coat of arms—an artistic partnership that resulted in timeless beauty. One cannot overlook Van Aelst’s engravings like "The Crucified Christ Surrounded by Mourning Angels" or his contributions to “The Battles of the Old Testament” series—such as “Jacob Killing Absalom, ” “David Returning in Triumph with the Head of Goliath, ” “Gideon Choosing His Soldiers, ” and “The Defeat of the Ethiopians.
