In the bustling streets of 14th century Italy, a distinguished figure emerges from the crowd - the notary. Clad in a vibrant violet and scarlet bonnet and cape, this judicial authority commands respect and attention. As he walks through the market square, his presence is juxtaposed by two Italian merchants on either side. On the left stands an artisan wearing a striking blue cape and hood, complemented by a scarlet tunic adorned with a belt and purse. The right merchant mirrors his counterpart's attire, donning a matching blue cape and hood. Together, they represent the skilled guild artisans of their time. This captivating scene comes to life in L'Assiette au Beurre's satirical lithograph from 1904_8_6: Metiers - Notary. It captures the essence of medieval Italy where trade flourished under the watchful eye of these legal professionals. Moving forward in time to the 15th century, we encounter another depiction of a notary's costume - this time belonging to one serving within the church. His brown bonnet and blue cape exude an air of solemnity as he carries out his duties with utmost reverence. Meanwhile, at an Italian merchant tribunal during this era, magistrates sit atop their elevated seats while scribes or notaries stand diligently in the pit below. Their presence ensures that justice prevails amidst commercial disputes and transactions. Barthel van den Berghe immortalizes yet another facet of notarial life through his oil painting titled "Notary. " This masterpiece showcases intricate details that capture both power and wisdom emanating from this esteemed profession. However, history also reveals darker moments for these guardians of legality. In Mexico during 1927, engraving depicts a tragic event where young lovers seeking marital blessings are executed alongside their priest by military forces due to alleged violations against religious laws – highlighting how even those entrusted with upholding justice can become victims of injustice.
