"Nutzhorn Dorothea Margaretta: A Glimpse into Rural America in 1939" Step into the world of Nutzhorn Dorothea Margaretta, a talented photographer who captured the essence of rural life in 1939. In Malheur County, Oregon, we meet Mrs. Cleaver, a resilient woman raising her five sons on a new farm. Despite the challenges they face, their determination shines through. Meanwhile, George Cleaver is embarking on an ambitious project to develop 177 acres of raw land in Malheur County. With hard work and perseverance, he hopes to transform this untouched landscape into something remarkable. Traveling across North Carolina and Oregon, Lange's lens reveals the stark reality faced by many during this era. A rail fence with poor barbed wire stands as a testament to the struggles endured by farmers in Person County. In Yamhill County, Oregon, eight cooperating farmers come together to load wagons full of corn for storage in silos. This spirit of collaboration showcases the resilience and unity found within farming communities. Lange also captures scenes from hop pickers' camps - places where families gather to harvest crops and make ends meet during challenging times. These images provide insight into the lives led by those dependent on seasonal agricultural work. Venturing further west to Klamath County, Oregon, we find ourselves inside a potato cellar - an essential part of preserving crops for future use. The dedication required to sustain these farms is evident throughout Lange's photographs. Boundary County in Idaho becomes another backdrop for Lange's exploration of rural life. Here we witness new settlers living in shacks at the foot of hills with poor sandy soil – yet their determination remains unwavering. The Unruf family is depicted amidst stump piles on their partly developed farm; their journey towards progress symbolizes hope amid adversity. On Cox Farm in Bonner County lies evidence of hard work, with stumps piled high and ready for burning.
