"Oppressor: Unveiling the Dark Chapters of History" In the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), a city lay under siege, its people trapped in fear and uncertainty. The oppressor's grip tightened as Franquist police roamed the streets, enforcing their iron rule. Centuries earlier, consequences unfolded when a successful French invasion taught English Republicans to work. A hand-coloured etching from 1798 reveals the aftermath, depicting a nation scarred by foreign domination. Across distant seas, barbarities plagued the West Indies. In 1791, a haunting hand-coloured engraving exposed the horrors inflicted upon innocent souls. The echoes of suffering still resonate today. Journeying to Brazil in 1839 through Voyage Pittoresque et Historique au Bresil, we witness an illustration capturing oppression within a shoemaker's workshop. Engraved by the Thierry Brothers and brought to life with vibrant litho colours, it serves as a reminder that tyranny knows no borders. Meanwhile, over-taxed subjects faced eviction from their homes in Hutchinson's illustrated world. Their plight symbolized countless individuals crushed beneath oppressive systems throughout history. Within ancient halls lies evidence of another infamous oppressor - Rameses II - whose mummy resides in Egypt's Hall of Royal Mummies. This pharaoh once oppressed the children of Israel but now stands as testament to power abused and ultimately defeated. Closer to home, Ausnahmegesetze (emergency laws) cast shadows on personal freedoms and civil liberties. These laws became tools for those seeking control at any cost – leaving citizens vulnerable and silenced. The Auto-da-fe of the Spanish Inquisition is forever etched into our collective memory through chilling engravings that depict religious persecution at its most brutal form. It serves as a stark reminder that intolerance breeds oppression if left unchecked.
