"Exploring the World: Outrigger Tales from Hawaii to Papua New Guinea" In the mid-1800s, Hawaiians embraced outriggers as a means of transportation and fishing, skillfully maneuvering through the Pacific waves. Meanwhile, in Myanmar's enchanting Bagan, a hot air balloon soared gracefully over ancient temples at dawn in November 2012. Traveling further east to Papua New Guinea, we find ourselves immersed in a native village where they are an integral part of their culture. These sturdy boats connect communities and provide sustenance amidst breathtaking coastal landscapes. Centuries earlier, Dutch navigator Abel Tasman embarked on his exploration expedition. His ships encountered Polynesian outrigger canoes near Fiji Islands - a fascinating encounter captured in a late 19th-century line engraving based on Tasman's original drawing from c1643. From Sri Lanka's Negombo Beach at sunrise to Easter Island's Rapa Nui with its unique outrigger canoe traditions, these vessels continue to shape lives across diverse shores. The South coast offers stunning vistas that showcase the beauty of outriggers against azure waters. Venturing into Southeast Asia, we discover Palawan's Coron Island and El Nido Bay - both adorned with vibrant outrigger boats dotting their pristine beaches. These picturesque scenes epitomize tropical paradise while highlighting the significance of these traditional watercrafts. Returning westward to Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, surfing enthusiasts ride waves atop modernized versions canoes. This fusion of tradition and contemporary sport showcases how this age-old vessel continues to evolve alongside our ever-changing world. Finally reaching Admiralty Islands off Papua New Guinea once again reminds us of the enduring legacy left by these remarkable boats throughout history. They have connected cultures and facilitated exploration for centuries - bridging gaps between distant lands and fostering understanding among people around the globe. Outriggers truly embody adventure on water.
