"From the Battlefields of San Juan to the Rocky Mountains: The Mighty Pack Train" In the midst of the Spanish-American War, a litho captures the fierce Battle of San Juan in Santiago de Cuba. Amidst the chaos and smoke, pack horses tirelessly transport supplies to support soldiers on both sides. Traveling back in time to the 1800s, we find ourselves amidst towering peaks as pack horses navigate treacherous paths in the Rocky Mountains. These sturdy animals serve as lifelines for explorers and settlers alike, carrying essential provisions across rugged terrain. Venturing further east, outside Damascus Gate in Jerusalem during 1898, a pack train rests after an arduous journey. This scene paints a vivid picture of ancient trade routes where goods were transported by these trusty steeds. Attributed to George Davidson's lens is an image capturing a moment of respite for a pack train. In this tranquil setting, their weary bodies find solace before embarking on another leg of their journey through uncharted territories. Across Idaho's vast landscapes grazes a Basque sheep herder leading his loyal train of pack horses. Their synchronized steps echo through valleys as they ensure that no woolly wanderer is left behind. Journeying northwards to Alaska circa 1920 reveals bustling lumber stations along Yukon River's banks. Here, fuel for steamers arrives via hardworking pack trains - vital resources supporting Alaska's booming timber industry. Tracing history back two centuries earlier brings us to Santa Fe Trail in 1820. A bustling convoy forms as wagons are loaded onto mules and donkeys transform into reliable "pack trains, " transporting goods across vast distances with unwavering determination. A glimpse into late-19th-century Washington showcases a lumberjack family proudly posing beside stacks of fragrant cedar logs hauled by faithful equine companions. Together they conquer nature's challenges while building communities from forested lands.
