Step into the parlor of Oxton House, Devon, seat of Rev. John Beaumont Swete, and you'll find yourself transported back to a time when poets gathered for lively discussions and breakfast parties. In 1815, the home of poet Samuel Rogers became a hub for literary giants such as William Wordsworth, Robert Southey, Samuel Coleridge, Washington Irving, and even Lord Byron himself. As captured in an engraving by Charles Mottram, these esteemed guests engaged in intellectual banter that shaped the course of English literature. Fast forward to a different setting - aboard RMS Carpathia - where Ida Stanton penned a letter filled with excitement about her recent visit to Devon House I SCREAM ice cream shop in Kingston, Jamaica. The delightful flavors tickled her taste buds as she savored each scoop amidst the vibrant atmosphere. But parlors aren't limited to England or Jamaica; they can be found across continents. Take Sylt in Schleswig-Holstein: inside the Old Frisian House from 1640 on Keitumer Watt lies a parlor that exudes history and charm. Meanwhile, Bloomfield's Holstens Ice Cream Parlor in New Jersey serves up sweet treats while also serving as an iconic location. Traveling further south brings us to Cefalu in Sicily where an ice cream seller entices passersby with their delectable gelato creations. The joy on people's faces is evident as they indulge in this frozen delight against the backdrop of Italy's picturesque streets. Art lovers will appreciate how parlors have been immortalized through various mediums over centuries. "Early Sorrow, " painted on canvas in 1861 captures raw emotions within its strokes while Torii Kiyonaga's prints transport viewers to Japan during the late 18th century with pieces like "A Fan Suggesting a Dispersed Storm" and "A Mirror on a Stand Suggesting the Autumnal Moon.
