From the vibrant textiles of Africa's Frederick William Koko Mingi VIII, King of Brass (top left), to the intricate patterns of a jumper suit by Gordon Conway (top left), this collection showcases the rich and diverse world of patterned clothing throughout history. Joining the ranks are the resplendent Prince Bhawani Sing of Sitamau, captured in a processional portrait (1855, gouache, silver), and Celine Dion, a Canadian singer representing Switzerland at the age of 20 (1992). The Reverend James Boyle's West African attire (undated) adds to the tapestry, as does the traditional clothing of Hido's Smiling Geisha Girl from Japan (undated). The Karen of Qsuitsup from Greenland (1960s) and a young married Russian woman amidst birch trees (1950s) round out this global exploration. Even the humble Tiger cowrie shells (undated) boast intricate patterns, reminding us that beauty and detail can be found in the smallest of things.
