In this collection of historical images, we catch a glimpse of the harsh realities faced by those living in poverty throughout different periods and places. The painting by Henri Pille depicts Parisians bustling in front of a municipal canteen during the siege of the city by the Prussians in 1870. It serves as a reminder of how scarcity and hardship can bring people together, seeking solace and sustenance. Moving on to Shanghai, an engraving from 1882 shows us a night asylum where individuals sought refuge amidst their struggles. This image is accompanied by another engraving depicting Hanoi Faubourg and street vendors, illustrating life in Tonkin during 1884. These scenes highlight the resilience and resourcefulness of those trying to make ends meet despite challenging circumstances. The collection also includes glimpses into other parts of the world affected by poverty. An engraving showcases Aboriginal Australians gathered at a camp, reminding us that poverty knows no borders or boundaries. Similarly, an illustration from Victor Hugo's "The Book of Mothers" portrays children who are undoubtedly impacted by their families' impoverished conditions. We then travel to Dublin's Liberties district through an engraving from 1890, capturing one corner of this impoverished area. The image reflects both the dilapidation and vibrancy found within these communities struggling against adversity. Lastly, we come across soldiers in Panama depicted through an engraving based on drawings made during exploration missions between 1876-1878. Even amidst military operations, poverty persists as shown here. Throughout history, whether it be during times of war or peace, poverty remains an ever-present challenge for many societies worldwide. These images serve as reminders that while progress has been made over time to alleviate such hardships for some individuals and communities globally; there is still much work to be done towards eradicating poverty altogether.
