"L'Assiette au Beurre," a renowned French political humor diary, has long tackled sensitive topics with biting satire. In its 242nd issue from 1905, artist Gabriele Galantara depicted the Vatican in a lighthearted yet disturbing cartoon titled "The old prelate to the young seminarian." This image, alongside others from the same era, hints at the deep-rooted issue within the Church. The Church's dark secret was not limited to the Vatican. Figures like Gilles de Rais, a companion of arms of Joan of Arc in the 15th century, are rumored to have been involved in such heinous acts. The 19th-century engraving "Au dormitory" in L'Assiette au Beurre further illustrates the anticlerical and pedophilic themes that persisted. The moral of the Jesuites, as depicted in another L'Assiette au Beurre cover, reads, "Courage. My son, on top there are little boys." This chilling statement speaks volumes about the pervasive issue of lust and pedophilia within the Church. The cover of Le Don Quixote, number 659, also satirically addresses the issue with the caption, "Services grave, etc." However, the true gravity of the situation was far from a joke. In 1903, L'Assiette au Beurre published another disturbing image titled "Services grave, etc," which further illustrates the prevalence within the Church. These historical depictions serve as a stark reminder of the dark past and the ongoing struggle to address the issue within religious institutions.
