Pillars are vertical structures that support a building, bridge, or other structure and can be made of stone, concrete, steel, wood, or other materials and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Pillars provide stability to the structure they support by transferring the weight of the structure onto the ground. In addition to their structural purpose they can also serve as decorative elements in architecture, and are often used as part of an entranceway or portico to create an impressive entrance into a building or space and are be used to frame windows and doorways for added aesthetic appeal. While they have been around since ancient times, they remain popular today due to their versatility and ability to add beauty and strength to any structure.
