Prince William III of Orange-Nassau, also known as William of Orange, was a key figure in European history during the late 17th century. As the stadtholder of the Dutch Republic and later King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, he played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of his time. Born in 1650 into the House of Orange-Nassau, William was groomed for leadership from an early age. He became stadtholder at just 21 years old and quickly established himself as a skilled military commander and diplomat. His marriage to Mary II of England solidified his position on the international stage. William's most famous achievement was leading the Glorious Revolution in England in 1688, which saw him overthrow James II and establish constitutional monarchy in Britain. He ruled jointly with Mary until her death in 1694, after which he continued to reign as sole monarch until his own passing in 1702. Known for his commitment to Protestantism and opposition to Catholic absolutism, Prince William III left a lasting legacy that continues to be felt today. His influence can be seen not only in British politics but also throughout Europe's royal families. Prince William III remains a towering figure in history whose impact is still studied and debated by scholars around the world.
