Raffaello Santi, also known as Raphael, was a renowned Italian artist during the Renaissance period. His works continue to captivate art enthusiasts around the world. One of his most famous masterpieces is "The School of Athens, " a fresco located in Stanza della Segnatura. Painted around 1510-1511, it showcases an array of philosophers and scholars engaged in intellectual discussions. Another notable artwork by Raphael is "Portrait of a Young Woman (La Muta), " created circa 1507. This captivating portrait captures the beauty and grace of its subject with meticulous attention to detail. "The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament (La disputa del sacramento)" is another masterpiece by Raphael from 1509-1510. This religious painting depicts various figures engaging in theological debates and symbolizes profound spiritual contemplation. In "Pope Leo I, Repulsing Attila, " painted between 1511-14, Raphael portrays Pope Leo I's legendary intervention against Attila the Hun through vivid imagery and dramatic storytelling. Collaborating with his assistant Giulio Romano, Raphael created "Liberation of St Peter" in 1514 as a stunning fresco that showcases dynamic movement and intense emotions. One cannot overlook Raphael's ability to depict mythological scenes like "Venus and Cupid riding two sea monsters. " In this piece, Cupid raises an arrow while Venus gracefully rides alongside him on sea creatures—an exquisite portrayal of love and desire. Among his other notable works are "Madonna of the Chair" housed at Pitti Palace in Florence—a serene depiction of Mary holding baby Jesus—and grotesque paintings from Vatican loggias that showcase intricate designs intertwined with mythical creatures. Raphael's talent extended beyond painting; he also excelled at sculpture as seen in his delicate creation titled "Head of an Angel.
