"Rag and Bone: A Glimpse into the Poverty of Germany" This captivating collection of images takes us back to a time when poverty loomed over the streets of Germany. The late 19th century lithographs and woodcuts vividly depict the struggles faced by those living in destitution. One particular illustration from "Le Chiffonnier de Paris" by Felix Pyat showcases the return to barter, as people resorted to trading goods instead of using currency. The monochrome photograph captures an intimate moment between a little rag-and-bone man, his face etched with hardship. In another image titled "In Extremis, " we witness the resilience of individuals amidst dire circumstances. Their determination shines through despite their tattered clothes and worn-out expressions. The water carrier, melon seller, rag-and-bone woman, and confectionery seller depicted in these artworks highlight the various occupations that emerged within this impoverished community. Each person plays their part in eking out a meager existence on the streets. A series of photographs captured by Russell Woods transports us to July 18th, 1975 – a day where we encounter a young rag-and-bone boy navigating residential streets. These snapshots freeze moments filled with both innocence and struggle as he goes about his daily routine. As we observe him at the reins of his horse-drawn cart, it becomes evident that this mode of transportation was not only practical but also symbolic. It represents an era when resourcefulness prevailed over modern conveniences. Through these powerful visuals, we gain insight into a world marked by scarcity and hardship. Yet amidst adversity emerges stories of resilience, perseverance, and human connection – reminding us that even in times of great need, there is still hope for brighter days ahead.
