Renatus Cartesius, also known as Rene Descartes, was a renowned French mathematician and philosopher. Born in 1596, Descartes made significant contributions to the fields of mathematics and science during his lifetime. His groundbreaking work in analytical geometry laid the foundation for modern calculus. Descartes' philosophical ideas were equally influential. He is famously known for his statement "Cogito, ergo sum" (I think, therefore I am), which became a fundamental principle of Western philosophy. Descartes believed in the power of reason and advocated for skepticism towards traditional beliefs. Throughout history, various portraits have captured Descartes' image. From colour engravings to illustrations by Boris Mestchersky and anonymous creators, these depictions showcase his intellectual presence. In one engraving titled "Descartes defendant sa vie menacee par des bateliers hollandais, " we see him defending his life against Dutch boatmen who threatened him. Another portrait from "Portraits des Grands Hommes, femmes illustres" portrays Descartes with an air of wisdom and intellect. A page from his book "Les meteores" reveals his interest in meteorology and natural phenomena. Descartes' legacy continues to inspire scholars worldwide. His innovative methods revolutionized mathematics and philosophy alike.
