A reredos is a stunning piece of artwork that adorns the wall behind an altar, adding beauty and significance to religious spaces. One such example is the mosaic of "The Lord's Supper, " which graces the New Reredos in Westminster Abbey. This engraving captures the intricate details and grandeur of this masterpiece. In another depiction, we see The High Altar and Reredos Beyond The Choir of Westminster Abbey from around 1935. This photograph showcases the magnificence of this sacred space, with its ornate carvings and exquisite craftsmanship. Moving on to St. Alban's Cathedral in Hertfordshire, England, we encounter The Wallingford Screen - an elaborately carved reredos or altar screen within the medieval vaulted quire. Its intricate design transports us back in time, evoking a sense of awe and reverence. R. J. De Freitas' Finial from Reredos (1939) catches our attention with its delicate detailing and elegant form. It serves as a testament to the skillful artistry employed in creating these religious masterpieces. Further north at St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle-on-Tyne, we find yet another remarkable reredos depicted in an engraving known as The New Reredos. Its grandeur commands attention while inspiring devotion among worshippers. Edward Jewett's Fragment (c. 1940) offers us a glimpse into history through its weathered appearance and worn edges. Despite its fragmented state, it still exudes a sense of spirituality that resonates deeply within us. William Kieckhofel's Decorations on Reredos and Sanctuary Walls (1940) showcase vibrant colors that breathe life into these sacred spaces while Randolph F Miller's paintings on reredos walls transport us into ethereal realms filled with divine grace. Bernini's Design for reredos at Holy Trinity Church Florence, in a Gothic revival frame, demonstrates the fusion of artistic styles and influences.
