Rustchuk, a town steeped in history and turmoil, has been at the center of many significant events in the Balkans. Located in Bulgaria, it has witnessed the continuing crisis that has plagued this region. Our artists have diligently taken notes on Rustchuk and its neighboring towns such as Rasgrad, Shumla, Kavarna, and even across the River Lom into Asia. Through their engravings, they have captured the essence of these places during times of crisis. The Balkan Peninsula itself has not been spared from conflicts either. Engravings depicting the crisis in Bulgaria serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by this nation. During the Russo-Turkish War, Rustchuk became a target for bombardment. The devastating images captured through engravings reveal the destruction inflicted upon this town. Amidst all chaos and danger, our correspondent and artist narrowly escaped harm's way during their time in Rustchuk. Their survival is testament to their bravery amidst war-torn surroundings. A picturesque map showcases not only Rustchuk but also other regions affected by conflict - Danubian Provinces, Turkey, Asia Minor, Southern Russia, and Crimea. It highlights how far-reaching these wars were. Prince Alexander's return to Bulgaria was an important event for its people.
