Sandro Botticelli, born Alessandro di Mariano dei Filipepi in 1444, was a renowned Italian painter of the Renaissance period. His works are celebrated for their exquisite beauty and intricate details. One of his most famous paintings is "La naissance de Venus" or "The Birth of Venus. " In this masterpiece, Venus receives a robe from the goddess of spring to cover her nudity while being embraced by Zephyr, the god of wind, and a nymph. Painted between 1482 and 1485, it showcases Botticelli's mastery in capturing ethereal beauty. Another notable work is "The Dead Christ Mourned, " created around 1501-05. This piece depicts the sorrowful scene after Christ's crucifixion with mourners surrounding him. The use of tempera grassa on panel adds depth and emotion to this poignant portrayal. Botticelli's attention to detail can be seen in "The Birth of Venus" (detail), painted circa 1485. Here, he focuses on Venus rising from the water on a shell surrounded by Hour, the goddess of spring, and Zephyr carrying Aura with him. The delicate brushwork and vibrant colors bring this mythological scene to life. In his religious artworks like "The Virgin Adoring the Child" (1480-90) and "Madonna and Child with Angels" (1465-70), Botticelli captures tender moments between Mary and Jesus through his skilled use of tempera on poplar panel. These pieces showcase his ability to convey both divinity and human emotions. Botticelli also contributed frescoes to the Vatican Sistine Chapel as part of his series depicting Moses' life story. These include scenes such as an Egyptian under Moses' sword, a Hebrew man rescued by a woman from an Egyptian manhandling him, and Moses putting on shoes on his feet - all painted in 1481.
