Sawamura Sojuro III, a renowned actor of the late 18th century, captivated audiences with his versatile performances and exceptional talent. In one captivating play titled "Edo no Hana Ako no Shiogam, " created by Utagawa Toyokuni I in 1796, Sawamura Sojuro III portrayed the character Oboshi Yuranosuke with great intensity and emotion. Another notable role played by Sawamura Sojuro III was that of Muchizo, the packhorse-man in the play "Miyamairi Musub" around 1797. With his impeccable acting skills, he brought this character to life on stage, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed it. Collaborating with other esteemed actors such as Arashi Ryuzo II and Segawa Kikunojo III, Sawamura Sojuro III showcased his versatility. Together they depicted memorable scenes like Satsuma Gengobei and Mawashi-otoko in c. 1795 or Soga no Juro alongside Osagawa Tsuneyo II as Oiso no Tora in 1784. In works by Torii Kiyonaga from the same period, Sawamura Sojuro III continued to shine brightly. Whether portraying Shige alongside Nakayama Kojuro VI (Nakamura Nakazo I) as Chidori or playing Koito alongside Segawa Kikunojo III as Koito and Ichikawa Danjuro V as Dekurokube; each performance displayed his dedication to perfection. Not limited to traditional plays alone, Sawamura also ventured into more unconventional roles such as Shiragiku opposite Ichikawa Yaozo III or Ukita Sakingo's ghost beside Matsumoto Koshiro IV in various productions throughout the late 18th century.
