The Second Empire, a period of French history from 1852 to 1870, was marked by significant political and cultural developments. The Battle of Solferino on June 24th, 1859, depicted in an oil painting, symbolized the military prowess of Napoleon III's regime. Meanwhile, a caricature portrayed Baron Georges Eugene Haussmann as a beaver, highlighting his role in transforming Paris through urban planning. In the Salon of painting and sculpture held in 1857 at the Palais de l'Industrie gallery, artistic masterpieces showcased the grandeur and elegance that characterized this era. A portrait captured Empress Eugenie praying in black and white photography during this time. The Longchamps Race Course became a popular gathering spot for society women adorned with fashionable crinoline dresses. Handcolored lithographs depicted their stylish attire while enjoying horse racing at this newly opened racetrack. The Theatre Francais also underwent renovations during this period with its new foyer designed by Prosper Chabrol featuring a marble statue of Voltaire. Mme. De R. , dressed in cream crinoline dress with a purple mantle and bonnet adorned with yellow ribbon, posed elegantly within this opulent setting. Art enthusiasts flocked to the Paris Salon exhibition in 1865 where they marveled at Edouard Manet's controversial masterpiece "Olympia. " This engraving captured viewers engrossed in contemplating the boldness of Manet's work. Children frolicked amidst nature's beauty within Tuileries Gardens both in 1859 and later revisited through lithography created in 1898. These images reflected the timeless joy experienced by young ones throughout different eras. During the war of 1870, people sought solace on Paris Ramparts as depicted through prints capturing their presence amidst turmoil—a testament to resilience even during challenging times.
