Sekiguchi Shinsuke, a renowned actor of the Edo period, graced the stage with his incredible talent and captivating performances. In one of his notable roles, he portrayed Minamoto no Yoshiie in the play "Date Nishiki Tsui no Yume, " as depicted by Torii Kiyonaga in 1778. With impeccable skill and dedication, Shinsuke brought this historical character to life, mesmerizing audiences with his portrayal. Throughout his career, Shinsuke collaborated with other esteemed actors such as Ichikawa Danjuro V and Segawa Kikunojo III. Together, they created unforgettable moments on stage that left spectators in awe. In a pentaptych from 1785 by Torii Kiyonaga, Shinsuke can be seen alongside Monnosuke II as Miyukinosuke and Hatsune-hime respectively. Their chemistry was palpable as they seamlessly embodied their characters' emotions. Shinsuke's versatility shone through in various roles he undertook. In another pentaptych from 1788 by Torii Kiyonaga, he shared the spotlight with Ebizo IV while portraying eleven different actors. This display of range demonstrated Shinsuke's ability to transform himself into distinct personalities effortlessly. Not only did Shinsuke excel in traditional theater productions but also excelled at depicting everyday life scenes like "A Fan Suggesting a Dispersed Storm" (Sensu no seiran) from Torii Kiyonaga's series "Eight Fashionable. . " circa 1777. His attention to detail and nuanced expressions added depth to these depictions. In addition to his theatrical achievements, Sekiguchi Shinsuke participated in prints showcasing courtesans and ghostly figures alongside fellow actors like Segawa Kikunojo III and Sawamura Sojuro III.
