Turkish Emperor Selim II, also known as the "Magnificent," ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1566 to 1574. This enigmatic figure is depicted in various works of art, such as the coloured engraving from 1870 and the anonymous portrait between 1570 and 1590. Selim II is best remembered for commissioning the stunning Mosque in Adrianople, now Edirne, Turkey, which is illustrated in the 1890 view. His reign was marked by military successes, but also by the construction of grand architectural projects and the patronage of the arts, preceded by Sultans such as Abdul Hamid I, Ahmed I, Ahmed II, and Beyazit I, and was succeeded by his son Murad III. His wife, Haseki Hurem Sultan, is also renowned for her beauty and power. Today, Selim II rests in peace in the Mausoleum of the Sultans located on the grounds of Aya Sofya in Istanbul.
