Joseph Selleny (1823-1864): A 19th-century Austrian photographer who captured the beauty and diversity of far-off lands. From the rock temples of Mamallapuram, India (1858), to the missionary's house on Puinipet Island in the Caroline Islands (1858), Selleny's lens revealed the vibrant colors and intricate details of exotic locales. His images of the island of St. Paul in the Indian Ocean (undated, c1850s), native people of Tahiti (1859), and bustling streets of Madras, India (1858), transport us to a time of adventure and discovery. Selleny's photographs of palm groves in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and the gateway to Point de Galle (1858) showcase the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of these far-flung places. Through Selleny's lens, we travel back in time and experience the wonder of the world as it was over a century ago.
